More Living Conversations on March 9
The next Living Conversations gathering will take place on Friday, March 9, at 6:30pm at my place in Loma Linda, California. The topic of this next meeting will be: “Adventism or Adventisms? Diverse Ways of Being Adventist.”
The featured panelists are:
Michael Campbell (adventist historian and director of the Ellen White Estate LLU Branch, and the blogger at Adventist History)
Alex Carpenter (grad student at Berkeley, and editor of the Spectrum Blog)
Bonnie Dwyer (editor of Spectrum magazine)
Larry Kirkpatrick (pastor of Mentone SDA Church, and webmaster of GreatControversy.org)
Johnny Ramirez-Johnson (LLU professor of religion on culture, psychology and religion, and the blogger at Johnny on CPR)
As usual, our evening will begin with a light meal and then proceed into conversations. Some questions that we’ll be discussing are:
What does it mean to be Adventist? What is the essence of Adventism?
What is it that binds Adventists of different stripes to be connected?
Which is more important in defining Adventism - doctrines or practices? What is the appropriate way of looking at the 28 Fundamental Beliefs?
Cultural Adventism - Is it a good thing? Bad thing? Neutral?
How much diversity can Adventism take? What are the boundaries of that diversity?
We’re expecting 40-50 students from Loma Linda university and others in the area.
If you have time, take a look at some of my reflections on my blog: All That Jazz about Theology: What Is the Tie That Binds Adventism?
Also, the Jan-Feb 1994 issue of Adventist Today has a series of excellent short articles on different expressions of Adventism.
