More Living Conversations on March 9

DialogueThe next Living Conversations gathering will take place on Friday, March 9, at 6:30pm at my place in Loma Linda, California. The topic of this next meeting will be: “Adventism or Adventisms? Diverse Ways of Being Adventist.”

The featured panelists are:

  • Michael Campbell (adventist historian and director of the Ellen White Estate LLU Branch, and the blogger at Adventist History)
  • Alex Carpenter (grad student at Berkeley, and editor of the Spectrum Blog)
  • Bonnie Dwyer (editor of Spectrum magazine)
  • Larry Kirkpatrick (pastor of Mentone SDA Church, and webmaster of GreatControversy.org)
  • Johnny Ramirez-Johnson (LLU professor of religion on culture, psychology and religion, and the blogger at Johnny on CPR)
  • As usual, our evening will begin with a light meal and then proceed into conversations. Some questions that we’ll be discussing are:

  • What does it mean to be Adventist? What is the essence of Adventism?
  • What is it that binds Adventists of different stripes to be connected?
  • Which is more important in defining Adventism - doctrines or practices? What is the appropriate way of looking at the 28 Fundamental Beliefs?
  • Cultural Adventism - Is it a good thing? Bad thing? Neutral?
  • How much diversity can Adventism take? What are the boundaries of that diversity?
  • We’re expecting 40-50 students from Loma Linda university and others in the area.

If you have time, take a look at some of my reflections on my blog: All That Jazz about Theology: What Is the Tie That Binds Adventism?

Also, the Jan-Feb 1994 issue of Adventist Today has a series of excellent short articles on different expressions of Adventism.
